Meet Our Spring '15 Gemstone Line-up

Our Spring '15 collection will be arriving in only a few short weeks, so today I'm sharing a special peek at the gemstones that will be featured in the new designs. The upcoming collection has a beach-y, slightly bohemian vibe, and features tropical-brights as well as iridescent, mellow hues.

This yummy, pink gemstone ranges from shades of rose to watermelon, and is a droolworthy gem that I promise even the least girly type will love (*raises hand*).

Weekend Warrior - Feat. Fall '14

As you may already know, I have major love for the leather, moto-inspired jacket, and it's an item that I can assure you is worth every bit of the investment - and then some. My own black leather jacket gets worn throughout the year, in all but the hottest months, and with any type of outfit - from dressed up, to the most casual (yes, honey, I know that my leather jacket doesn't really go with yoga pants, but then again, doesn't it?). 

Of course, a great leather jacket is the perfect item to take you through all of your weekend whereabouts: a favourite pair of jeans and a tee, some booties and you're basically set. One of the perks of being a designer is getting to wear my pieces as soon as they're created. It's a bit of a teaser for customers when I'm wearing a design that catches their eye ("It's part of the upcoming collection..."), plus it allows me to see what jewels people react to, before they go to market. This said, while I'm always proud of all of the designs that make a collection's final cut (and not all of them do), there are some pieces that strike a special chord and that make their way into my personal collection of jewellery.

The Arrival of Spring

The Spring '14 gemstone palette.

If you haven't heard the news, the new Keltie Leanne Designs collection launched this past Monday! The new line features eye-catching and geometric designs in bright spring-like colors. 

Spring 2014 features a palette of three bold-colored gemstones - lapis lazuli, green onyx and turquoise - complemented by three more subtle, iridescent gems - green amethyst, labradorite and moonstone. I am really excited to have incorporated some gemstones and colors into the line that I have never used before, namely, green onyx and moonstone, and love how all of the new collection's colors simultaneously contrast and mesh.

Featured: Georgia Straight's Holidays Style Guide

The Abundance Earrings

I'm thrilled to have my designs featured in this week's Georgia Straight, as a part of their Holiday Style feature. The Straight's Michelle Da Silva highlights our Abundance Earrings, Talisman Bracelet and Black Prince Necklace as a few of her top picks for the upcoming party season. 

While the Fall Collection wasn't designed solely with the holidays in mind - after all, I believe that pretty jewellery should be for all occasions and times of year - I knew when I was planning the line that the gemstones for this latest collection would be perfect for Christmas and holiday parties! I personally love the shimmer of our Fifth Element Necklace and find the rich berry shade of it's rubellite gemstones and delicate gold chain, begs to be worn during the festive time of year. The Renaissance Earrings are another elegant and eye-catching choice for a holiday fete, and would be especially dramatic with a simple up-do.

That Time I Turned Lemons Into Lemonade

People often ask me how I got into designing jewellery, and the truth is, there are many answers to this question. I have lots of little stories I could share with you about my childhood forays into entrepreneurship, or my early jobs working in retail selling jewellery. The one thing that not many people know, is that one of the major catalysts in the creation of Keltie Leanne Designs, was an upsetting and frankly, disturbing event.

It was the summer of 2011, and I was returning home at about 10:30pm from a glass of wine with friends. The previous few weeks had been a bit tumultuous for me personally, and I'd been feeling some frustration about how I could remedy the feelings of discontent I'd been recently experiencing. I was eager for some creative expression and a change in my life, but I wasn't quite sure what that looked like.

I was in an upbeat mood that night nonetheless, as the evening was heading into a long weekend, and I had upcoming plans to join my boyfriend for two weeks in Germany, for which he'd already departed just a day or two earlier.

As I pulled my car into our underground garage that night, I noticed that something was amiss - I could see through a small window beside the driveway, that our bedroom light was on. I was pretty sure I had turned that light off - in fact, I had a distinct memory of having done so - but didn't think too much of it, except that perhaps Chris had returned from Europe because he missed me so much. Well, it wasn't a realistic thought, but it did pop into my head! In any case, I came upstairs to our ground-level suite, unlocked the door only half cautiously, and stopped in my tracks. 

There were a couple of stray items that had spilled onto the floor from a countertop, several meters into our apartment. Nothing major, a business card or two, but it was out of sorts nonetheless. 

As I glanced upwards, I could see that the curtains of our patio sliding door were moving ever so gently in the breeze. My heart stopped and I felt panic start to rise. 

SHIT. I immediately realized that someone had broken into our home. I turned quickly on my heels and closed the door behind me, afraid to fully enter the apartment, in the unlikely case they were still there. (Me versus intruder? I didn't think that would end well.) I hurried upstairs to see my neighbour, whom I informed, "I'm pretty sure our apartment has been broken into and I'm trying not to freak out but Chris is away and what if they're still there and I'm afraid to go in by myself and we should probably call the police but let's go see what's what first." So she grabbed a golf club and back downstairs we went. Her first. 

It was a tidy break-in, with minimal vandalism, and I quickly surveyed my surroundings and observed was what missing: my laptop. reading glasses. my entire jewellery box. and a pillowcase. A pillowcase?? Presumably to stash their new-found goodies. 

And I'll skip ahead, through the teary phone calls to Germany, my mom, my best friend. Past the realization that I now had two weeks in this apartment alone, with the (mostly irrational) fear that the next time they'd come when I was sleeping. Past the sick feeling that my home had been violated, that someone had touched my bed. Gone through my drawers. Maybe even watched me as I left that night. Through the realization that my computer had old photos, of me and my friends, private notes...possibly contained confidential bank information, and social insurance numbers.

It sucked. I won't say it didn't. But I will tell you this:

Stuff is just stuff. Yes, even old photographs, and my grandmother's diamond earrings, and the necklace I was given when I was christened. It's just stuff. 

Don't get me wrong, like everyone else, I sometimes cling to the sentimentality of a particular object, and the love or meaning it represents. There are particular belongings that I have, that I truly do adore, and appreciate, and cherish. But when it comes down to what we can do and live without, stuff doesn't really matter. I was safe. My loved ones were safe. The stuff was just stuff.

Most people are good. I wasn't going to let one or two "bad eggs" effect my outlook on life, or ruin my week. Okay, it wasn't the best week I've had. But this experience also showed me the kindness of others, from the support and helping hands I got from neighbors to ensure my place was properly secured, to my friends, who welcomed me into their own homes if I needed a safe place.

And I don't even believe that the person or people who broke into my home are inherently bad, but truthfully, feel a bit sorry to know what sort of path they must have traveled to end up doing things like this.

Tenants insurance saved my ass. Until only a few months before our apartment break-in, I had always dismissed apartment insurance as something I didn't really need, because insurance is for what-ifs, or people who own their own home, or who have really expensive stuff. But let me tell you friend, if you don't have insurance, get your ass to a broker's office, stat, because if your home is vandalized, or floods, or everything burns in a fire - you're kinda screwed. Fortunately I had recently decided that yes, of course we should have insurance, and thank god I did.

What does this all have to do with Keltie Leanne Designs? Well friends, the realization that this gal didn't have any more sparkly accessories to adorn herself with led to a predicament: I was missing my lovely jewellery but also torn, because one doesn't build a collection of accessories they adore over night. And I can't remember quite how the idea hit, but as I perused shops filled with pretty little things, it started to dawn on me that maybe, I could try my hand at making some pieces myself. I'd been reading a lot about inspiring female entrepreneurs, a number of whom were designers, and it just sort of clicked: I want that to be me.

Two months after our home break-in I designed my first pair of earrings, and less than two months after that I had created my first collection and secured my first store.

I got a fire going inside of me, and turned the lemons that life had handed me into some delicious lemonade.

Maybe it's just a matter of perspective, but I truly see this break-ins as one of the best things to happen to me. It led me to fulfill the long-time dream of having my own business, and explore the creativity inside me that had long been untapped.

Little Black Dress

I'll admit it - I'm not much of a dress girl. Don't get me wrong, I do love donning a great party frock on occasion, but skirts and tops have been the mainstay of my "dressy" and professional wardrobes. I suppose the versatility of a skirt is what makes me wearing a dress a somewhat uncommon sight. The couple of statement-making cocktail dresses I own have seen me through many a wedding reception, birthday party, you name it - which in reality means a handful of fancy occasions per year. So in fact, it's not just that I rarely wear a dress, but also, I seldom buy dresses because I don't feel I have many occasions to wear one. All of my dress-shy feelings aside, I recently realized there were a number of events coming up that required a new dress, and it dawned on me that the item that could cure my "dresses-aren't-versatile" thinking was a perfect, little black dress.

I managed to nab this adorable scoop-neck, full-skirted number from Aritzia, just hours before my fall launch event and I've got big plans for this dress. It's already seen me to a Thanksgiving wedding, replete with black tights and a cherry red cardigan, and it's due to make at least two more appearances this upcoming holiday season. 

A little black dress can be worn with basic black pumps, ankle booties or a bright pair of statement shoes like the pair shown above. Throw on a simple cardi, a sparkly jacket, or leather bomber, and you've got three totally different and fabulous looks going on. And of course, when it comes to jewellery, a LBD is the perfect canvas for any of your favorite jewels - I've shown just a few of our new Fall 2013 designs that I think would finish off this look perfectly. Patterned tights, a simple clutch or colourful scarf - the possibilities for accessorizing a LBD are endless. 

I think I may have just cured my whole, dresses aren't practical, shopping mentality.

A Night To Remember

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Fall Fashion Launch with Fine Finds last Thursday! After weeks of prep, it was so exciting to have all of my new pieces on display, and to celebrate with everyone. It's so easy to get caught up in constant planning and anticipation of "the next big thing" in life, so it was wonderful to actually pause and soak it all in! 

This fall also marks two years of business for me, and it is really rewarding to reflect on how my company has grown and progressed. I remember a time when the thought of having my designs sold at Fine Finds was only a dream, and now I am proud to have had my jewellery sold there for over a year. It's also been great getting to know other designers, bloggers and media in the industry, and having many of these lovely ladies present at my launch was extra special!

Ready To Launch

Hey lovelies! As promised, today I want to share some insight into the makings of a new collection. So often the behind-the-scenes of a brand remains shrouded in mystery, so I love being able to give you an inside peek at what my day-to-day as a designer looks like. While jobs in the creative field can sometimes appear to be all play - the fact is that for many designers like myself, making our art comprises only a small fraction of our time. Here's some insight into the process of creating - and launching - a new jewellery collection:

Fall '13 Gemstones

1.) Conceptualizing a line -- including the overall mood of a collection, color palette, inspiration, etc. This process can evolve over several months or longer, before a new collection hits stores. It's kind of strange to find yourself thinking about Fall before the warm summer weather even arrives, but in order to keep things on track, planning needs to start early.

2.) Purchasing gemstones and other supplies -- While buying supplies can happen on an as-need, ad-hoc basis, I have to be mindful of what items I require in order to create a new collection - and then be able to fulfill demand once orders start arriving. There's nothing worse than only realizing after a collection has launched, that you can no longer get a hold of a specific cut of gemstone or that you need an item which will take two weeks to arrive via post. In other words, organization is key, which for me, means lots of spreadsheets, planning and budgeting in order to stay on track and avoid future stress. 

3.) Making the new designs -- This process can take anywhere from a week to several weeks. My first go around I create one of each design, until I'm satisfied with both the piece itself, and how it fits in with the broader collection. 4.) Photographing the designs -- let me be honest here: photographing jewellery sucks (wanna know how I really feel?!). While I have a wonderful friend who does a great job photographing all of our designs, capturing the subtle sheen of metal, or the facets on 3 millimeter gemstone, is a tough task for even the most seasoned photography pro. Jewellery is notorious for being one of the most difficult things to photograph, and being the perfectionist that I am, this aspect of the business has caused me a fair amount of angst. The problem is, jewellery rarely looks quite as good in photos as it does in person, but nonetheless, I want to give the best, most accurate representation of my designs possible, and this often means multiple attempts to get it right.

5.) Getting photos website ready -- this means editing, cropping and uploading the jewellery images to our website (where they'll hang out behind the scenes until launch time).

6.) Pricing the designs -- so, how much to charge? I need to keep close tabs on all of my costs, time, etc. in order to ensure that my pricing makes sense. 

7.) Creating the Look Book -- our first look book was Spring 2013, when I was fortunate to collaborate with To Vogue Or Bust. Coming up this Fall, you'll be seeing another gorgeous gal modelling our designs...

8.) Putting it all together -- this includes snazzy descriptions on the website and a line sheet (fancy industry speak for catalog) - plus look book - for buyers.

9.) Order taking time -- the collection isn't live on the website just yet. First, I will meet with our retailers to find out which items they'd like on their shelves.

10.) Make, make, make & sell, sell, sell -- pieces are created, orders are filled and everything is ready to go public!

Of course, none of this happens in perfect, consecutive order and there are many factors that contribute to a successful collection launch; I will connect with media, get designs into the hands of my favorite bloggers, and more, all the while getting you excited and anticipating the arrival of the new line...Get ready to see the results in early September!
