Jewellery Tips for Travel

Pare things down to the basics. There's no need to bring your entire jewellery collection on holidays. Rather, stick with a few key pieces that work well together, on their own and with different outfits, and then call it a day.

Keep things organized on the road. Store jewellery in a dedicated travel case, (we like this one and this one), or in a dedicated compartment in your toiletries bag. This make-up bag from Sephora has a special zippered compartment just for jewels. In order to prevent items from getting tangled or gemstones from potentially scratching one another, we recommend storing your items in clear, zippered bags. Check out our post for more info on this tip, here.

Leave irreplaceable items at home. That antique locket from your great-grandmother? Your 1-carat diamond engagement ring? Sometimes it's best to leave family heirlooms or very special (and pricy!) pieces in a safe place at home, especially if you're traveling in a country that may be unsafe or unkind to your jewels (because really, does trekking through Peru call for diamonds?)

Are you insured? If you are traveling with precious items, be sure that they are insured. Home and tenant's insurance will usually only cover items up to a few thousand dollars, so for pricier pieces of jewellery, be sure you have additional coverage.

Shop local.  Traveling to new cities and countries can be a great opportunity to purchase a unique piece of jewellery that will serve as the perfect memento from your trip. Check out boutiques featuring local designers, or purchase an item that has been crafted by the country's artisans.
